• The event will bring together project developers and operators, financiers, feedstock providers, waste hauliers, technology providers and government officials.

Green Gas Day 2021 – the UK’s largest gas-to-grid industry gathering which regularly attracts over 300 attendees – is set to take place in a month’s time, on 9th September.

After the 2020 edition was moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event will once again be an in-person affair, with the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham hosting.

The REA and CNG Services have been running Green Gas Day (formerly Biomethane Day) since 2012. The event will cover policy and technical developments relevant to all green gases, including biomethane, low-carbon hydrogen and bio-propane.

Attendees will have the chance to meet project developers and operators, financiers, feedstock providers, waste hauliers, technology providers and government officials in person at The National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

The UK has 143 existing biomethane injection projects, with a further 36 projects in the pipeline. Even more biomethane to grid projects are expected to be built under the new Green Gas Support Scheme, expected to be launched by BEIS in the Autumn. In addition, changes to the Renewable Heat Incentive, which came into effect on 1st April, made it easier for biomethane producers to access support under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, boosting biomethane production at existing plants.

Biomethane from thermal gasification is also seeing exciting developments, with the first plant being currently commissioned and other larger projects planned. Meanwhile, several trials are underway across the UK to prove the technical and safety case for low-carbon hydrogen and the Government is due to release their Hydrogen Strategy imminently along with a number of consultations to support the deployment of low-carbon hydrogen.

It is clear that demand and interest in Green Gas is only set to grow, and the industry has a key role to play in reaching net zero by 2050.
