EU obligations on the selective collection of bio-waste will come into force at the end of 2023, increasing the availability of source-separated bio-waste for composting and anaerobic digestion (AD). The project is funded by the European Commission as a 2.5-year LIFE Preparatory Project and is led by Fundació ENT with partners like Consorzio Italiano Compostatori, ACR+, European Compost Network, and Zero Waste Europe

The LIFE BIOBEST project includes key deliverables to capitalise on this opportunity. The project will:

• identify and validate current Best Practices (BP) and management instruments along the bio-waste management chain to produce quality compost and digestate;
• create Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) based on existing experiences and evidence;
• provide solutions to overcome technical, regulatory, economic, and environmental barriers through co-creation meetings with stakeholders;
• provide two decision-support tree guides for local and regional authorities to adapt bio-waste management models to their specific context;
• and develop premium European standards for bio-waste entering compost and AD to promote certification of these materials and treatment.
