• Manifesto recognises immediate and clear need for action when it comes to UK energy policy.

“It is fantastic to see the Liberal Democrat manifesto recognising the immediate and clear need for action when it comes to UK energy policy and in line with our own REA calls in many policies.

We’re pleased to see several positive steps on climate and energy on this front. The 90% renewable power target by 2030 is an ambitious target and welcome, but should go further to increase ambition in heat and transport too.

A number of REA calls from our First 100 Days action plan are in the manifesto, including the need for more joined up thinking and prioritisation at the highest level of government, more renewables, a spatial plan for grid networks and support for electric vehicles. The EV commitments in line with our recommendations include re-adopting the 2030 phase out date for new petrol car & van sales, providing centres of training excellence for the industry (and wider net zero skills) and improving accessibility.

The manifesto recognises the need for a wide range of policies and technologies to deliver the energy transition. This includes delivering more solar capacity, increasing levels of home insulation and implementing a well thought out Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
