• Report highlights scale of the challenge, and the opportunities available to rejuvenate the UK’s clean energy transition.
  • Only a third of required emission reductions to meet 2030 targets are currently covered by policy.
  • British-based renewable energy is the most affordable and quickest way to reduce reliance on unstable global fossil fuel markets.

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) has today published its UK Progress Report for 2024. The REA welcomes the report’s sobering analysis that urgent action is needed to get on track for the UK’s 2030 target.

The REA strongly urges the new Government to learn from past mistakes that are clearly spelled out in this report. The new Government must back the renewables and clean tech sector if it wants to achieve its key mission of fastest growth in the G7. The report highlights that the cost of key low-carbon technologies is decreasing, presenting an opportunity for the UK to increase investment, regain global climate leadership, and deliver affordable and secure energy for consumers. The report is clear that British-based renewable energy is the most affordable and quickest way to reduce reliance on unstable global fossil fuel markets.

Trevor Hutchings, CEO of the REA (Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology), said:

“Today’s progress report from the CCC demonstrates the scale of the challenge for the new Government but also the opportunities to rejuvenate the UK’s clean energy transition. With only a third of required emission reductions to meet 2030 targets currently covered by policy there is much to do. Addressing this requires decisive and quick action, and I am encouraged by the government’s early announcements to this end together with yesterday’s King’s Speech.

The REA looks forward to working closely with the new government to ensure that next year’s CCC Progress report presents a much more positive picture of the UK’s progress in the clean energy transition”
