Frank Gordon, Director of Policy, REA (Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology), said:
“REA welcomes the ambition on the CCC’s advice to Government on the UK’s NDC Greenhouse Gas emissions reduction target for 2035 (81% on a 1990 baseline).
The UN earlier this week announced that a 3.1C temperature increase was now possible based on current emissions, which provides a sobering reminder of the need for rapid, widespread, economy-wide decarbonisation. Renewables and associated business models, such as moving to a more circular economy, provide the solution to reducing emissions. The UK, having already reduced emissions at the fastest rate of any G7 nations, last month closed its last coal power plant, setting a track record of some success. At a time of revived political interest in internationalism, the new Government must build on these achievements to push global climate efforts forward.
The added benefits are the widespread economic opportunities which accompany the energy transition.”
