REA comments on the Green Party’s ‘Carbon Chancellor’ announcement

• The Green Party has announced its plans to introduce a ‘Carbon Chancellor’ to Number 11 if elected 
• The Carbon Chancellor would head up a new Department for the Green New Deal

Commenting on the announcement, Amy MacConnachie, Head of External Affairs at the Renewable Energy Association (REA) said:

“The REA welcomes the Green Party’s policy announcement today, to appoint a Carbon Chancellor. They have identified a weak link in the UK’s ambitions to decarbonise the country; the Treasury. The efforts of industry, businesses and civilians will be undermined if the Treasury is not on board. However, Treasury’s wholehearted support could cement the UK as a global leader in clean growth.

“At the REA, we are calling on all parties to adopt a Net Zero Treasury test, to be set by the Committee on Climate Change and enforced by an independent body, to ensure that all Government funding released by the Treasury does not impede the UK’s journey towards a wholly decarbonised economy.”
