The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) are to protect people from the risk of fire and explosions in the workplace.  Landfill gas is naturally produced and flammable, and this document sets out how workers are to be protected from the risks it poses.

This document revises the guidance originally issued by the Environmental Services Association www.esauk.org in 2005.  The revision was commissioned by the Landfill Gas Forum of the REA and was carried out by David Brown of Honace.

The document takes the reader through how to carry out a risk assessment to identify areas where there is potential for an explosive atmosphere, categorising (or zoning) the area, through to determining the right equipment to use, signage and training.  It provides guidance on area classification, zoning and zone extents using calculations derived from other guidance.
