• The REA welcomes confirmation from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) that the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) tariffs will remain unchanged from October 2022;
  • This decision follows their Annual Tariff Review (ATR) Call for Evidence, published last May;
  • The result of the review is extremely positive for the sector, showing BEIS has taken industry’s feedback and evidence on board.

The Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) has welcomed yesterday’s decision from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to not reduce the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) tariffs from October 2022, following their Annual Tariff Review (ATR) – Call for Evidence which was published last May.

Together with our members, the REA submitted a firm and comprehensive response to this Call for Evidence, strongly discouraging BEIS from using the ATR mechanism to make significant changes to (specifically, decreasing) the GGSS tariffs as doing so could unsettle developers and undermine future investments in this sector.

The review did indeed find that the existing tariffs are effective in providing revenues to incentivise plant development and intended levels of returns to industry, thus deciding against decreasing the tariffs at this time.

Furthermore, the REA also calls on the Government for continued support within the green gas sector, stressing its critical role in decarbonisation.

Kiara Zennaro, Head of Heat, Green Gas Lead at the Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA) said:

“We are really pleased that BEIS have taken on board industry’s feedback and evidence and decided not to reduce the tariffs for the Green Gas Support Scheme.

“Home-grown biomethane has a critical role to play in advancing the decarbonisation of our gas supplies, reducing our dependence on imported gas and improving our energy security and so it is vital that the Government continues to support this sector adequately.”

To find out more about green gases, do not hesitate to book your ticket to the REA’s UK Green Gas Day 2022. This event, taking place in Birmingham on Thursday 29th September is the UK’s largest industry gathering focused on green gases, including hydrogen – with over 300 people attending in previous years. The event’s packed conference programme includes presenters from NNFCC, Centrica, European Biogas Association, Future Biogas, Grosvenor, Acorn Bioenergy and REA sponsors Air Liquide, alongside Government representatives. Our expert line-up will showcase this thriving industry’s newest innovations and highlight key policy developments.
