As widely expected, Defra has announced that they will be deferring the implementation date for digital waste tracking, originally scheduled for April 2025, citing feedback from industry stakeholders and delivery partners. Full details in the letter linked here.
REA recognise the importance of quality data but welcome the delay. We need to ensure that industry has the information needed so that these reforms can be implemented successfully.
While they have not committed to an updated timeline, Defra has shared that they ‘will endeavour to have a digital service for waste tracking in place from April 2026.’ The delivery plans are now under review, and they expect to be able to update stakeholders on the scope and timeline for delivery by May 2025.
Defra also reiterates the importance of stakeholder input and cooperation at this stage and moving forward. If you have any views you’d like us to share with government on your behalf, please email us at jenny@r-e-a.net
