Deposit Return Scheme for drinks containers

Defra have released their response to the DRS consultation, part of the Resources and Waste Strategy reforms. They have announced that a deposit return scheme for beverage containers will start in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by October 2025. The scheme in Scotland starts in August 2023. The scheme will cover drinks containers from 50ml to 3 litres and made from PET plastic, steel and aluminium.  The Welsh scheme will include glass. A deposit (amount still to be confirmed) will be paid on purchase and returned once the empty container is returned. A Deposit Management Organisation will be appointed to administer the scheme. The issue of whether VAT will be charged on deposits has not been settled and discussions are ongoing with Treasury and Defra.
