On 10th April, the EA published new guidance for how businesses in England can manage sludges and other wastes from non-mains domestic sewage systems. These systems include, septic tanks, small sewage treatment plants, separator toilets, cesspools, chemical toilets, and portable sanitary toilets. They may be used by householders who cannot connect to sewer mains, campsites, marinas, construction sites, festival and show grounds, etc.
The guidance covers how operators should manage separator toilet waste, as well as sorting, treating, and classifying sludge from non-mains systems, and spreading residual septic tank sludges to agricultural land.
