A new research article, titled Quantification of microplastics in biowastes including biosolids, compost, and vermicompost destined for land application, by Ruffell et al., has been published in the January 2025 edition of Water Emerging Contaminants & Nanoplastics.

Researchers at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand sampled and analysed four different types of biowaste-derived amendments destined for land application: biosolids, vermicompost, bulk compost, and bagged compost. Microplastic fragments were extracted from the sample material and analysed for microplastic abundance, morphotype, polymer type, size, and colour.
