In light of continuous Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and the approach of winter, the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO) has issued an urgent appeal for assistance. This request was presented at the WBA National Associations Roundtable meeting, highlighting the critical need for decentralised energy solutions to secure Ukraine’s energy supply and resilience.

UABIO  is calling on the international biogas community to provide immediate support by supplying surplus and second-hand anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas systems. The urgency of the situation requires prompt action to help Ukraine develop a decentralised energy network that can withstand ongoing threats and ensure continuous energy provision.

UK biogas producers can provide support by:

1. Supporting modular/small biogas technology — Ukraine is working to establish a network of cost-effective, standardised, scalable, high-quality biogas and biomethane plants that can be rapidly installed.

    • They are seeking information on ‘glass-coated’ bolted tank digesters that require simple concrete foundations, double-membrane gas holders for efficient gas storage, and metal structures with insulated sandwich wall panels for equipment housing.
    • They are accepting donations of standardised equipment for waste reception, pretreatment, and processing in containerised or skid-mounted formats and containerised, pretested biogas upgrading systems for converting biogas to biomethane.

2. Provision of combined heat and power (CHP) systems — Ukraine is working towards a decentralised energy system using containerised CHP generators for easy and rapid installation near electrical grids, natural gas sources, and biogas plants.

    • They are seeking technical support including CHP manuals and training for implementation.
    • They are accepting donations of new, second-hand, or refurbished gas engines certified for natural gas, biomethane, and biogas production.
